Newton Senior Awarded $2,000 Star Student Scholarship

Senior Jaycee Shaver, Newton Schools, is the recipient of the 2022 Star Student Scholarship of Iowa in recognition for her academic achievements, leadership, extracurricular activities and educational goals.

Shaver is an active member of the Future Farmers of America, Future Health Professionals, Student Council, Girl Scouts, and is an active volunteer with her church. She plays the clarinet and saxophone in the marching, pep, and jazz bands, as well as soccer and volleyball. After graduation, she plans to attend college to study pediatric medicine. She has known since her freshman year that she aspires to work with children, and hopes to specialize in surgery, cardiology, or neurology.

After suffering the loss of her mother at age eight, Shaver shares that her grandmother has impacted her life in a significant way. “My grandma has not only made a significant impact in my life but everyone around her. She has always been on the sidelines of my games when I was in sports on the weekends and band events, concerts, and contests all throughout the many years I’ve played. My faith is a huge part of my life, and it is because of her I truly learned how people should be treated, despite their mistakes or faults.”
